The Helix, Flat, or Shen Men is a name for piercings through the flat area of the upper ear, also known as the Scapha. The difference between the three piercings lies in their placement.

• Helix is placed just inside the helix ridge of the ear. This placement is ideal if, at some point, you wish to transition to a ring or circular jewelry.
• The Flat is placed on the flat in the center of the upper ear. This can be a single piercing or a combination of several piercings to create a unique design.
• The Shen Men is located in the center of the ear, just above the Antihelix Ridge. There have been numerous claims that this piercing will have health benefits, but all of that is based on acupuncture, and piercers aren't acupuncturists; piercing is not the same as acupuncture.
