In Season 2 Episode 52, DaVo covers the Pros & Cons of having a male genital piercing called a Spider Bites Piercings. In addition, he covers what you should know before, the piercing experience, healing the piercing, Jewelry, and abandoning the piercing.

History:

  • lip piercings have a long history among the tribal people of Africa and South America

  • Was developed in the modern piercing industry in the late 80s.

Pros:

  1. Long History of healing

  2. Symmetry

  3. Quick Healing

  4. Less Contact as snake bites

  5. Can be added to other groupings

Cons

  1. The risk of damage doubled

  2. placement can limit jewelry

  3. Swelling

  4. scaring

  5. Can close quickly

Preparing & What you Should Know:

  • Piercer is experienced in this piercing, professional, informative and makes you feel comfortable, and offers a consultation that involves aftercare, risks, etc… Piercer should evaluate your anatomy.

  • This piercing can affect employment even after it is removed.

  • Your piercer should have experience with this piercing

  • Talk to your piercer about what jewelry you want to wear in the future

    • For rings - Placement needs to be higher and more outside of the mouth with Curved BB or Circular jewelry

    • For Studs and rings, as high as possible

    • For just studs, placement can be more deep inside the mouth

  • Cross-Contamination Prevention

  • Diet change and swelling reduction

  • Does the piercer provide aftercare products and written and verbal aftercare instructions?

  • Downsizing, with studs the jewelry will need to be downsized in 4-6 weeks

The Piercing Experience:

  • Consultation & Jewelry Selection

  • Waiver, Set Up, and Disinfection

  • Depending on your end goal for jewelry the piercings should be more vertically and outside the mouth. For studs or both options, the inside should be above or below the gum line.

  • When looking at the placement, look up close and at arm's length.

  • The area is clamped with forceps

  • The needle is inserted in and through

  • Forceps are removed

  • The needle is pushed out with a guide pin

  • The jewelry is threaded on the guide pin, inserted and the end is screwed on.

  • There may be some slight to moderate bleeding. The thinness of the guide pin may cause additional bleeding

  • Usually, you will have throbbing, aching, and warmth in the area for a few minutes afterward

  • Piercing is sensitive to the touch.

Pain:

Most say that it is between 2-4

The second piercing will usually be slightly more painful

Healing:

  • The average healing time is 2-4 months

  • Clean twice daily with sterile saline spray

  • Rinse twice daily with Biotene and sea salt and water

  • Swelling lasts 3-5 days

    • Reduce intake of tobacco, cannabis, vaping, hot and spicy foods, and salty foods and drinks.

    • Soft food and a simple diet for the first 5-7 days

    • Cold items and stay hydrated

    • Sleep with your head above your heart.

    • Limit movement of the piercing and jewelry

  • Change your diet and how you drink to avoid contact with the piercing.

  • Must practice cross-contamination prevention and isolate and avoid any contact with the piercing.

    • Clean hands

    • no oral contact.

    • Keep your environment clean

    • No Swimming

    • Keep Pets Away

    • Keep utensils clean and don’t share.

  • Avoid playing with the piercing or excessive movement

  • First 3-5 days you can experience slight bleeding off and on, redness/discolor, heat, and tenderness to the touch.

  • Avoid trauma and contact with the piercing.

  • Downsizing

Jewelry:

  • should leave jewelry in at all times

  • If you were pierced with a stud, you should wait 6 months before trying rings. If there are issues, go back to stud.

  • With threaded jewelry, the ends need to be checked regularly.

  • Ends with sharp edges or points should be avoided

  • If the jewelry is loose fitting it should be downsized

  • Glass can be worn temporarily

Living with the piercing:

  • Check the ends on a regular bases

  • Continue to avoid contact or stress on the jewelry and piercing.

  • Leave jewelry in at all times.

  • .During oral sex practice safe sex

  • Brushing the jewelry or using a rinse to reduce plaque build-up

Abandoning the Piercing:

  • If the piercing is still healing and there is signs of infection or another issue, consult a doctor or your piercer before removing the jewelry.

  • If the piercing is healing but there is no signs of issues, just remove the jewelry and monitor the area like any other wound.

  • If the piercing is healed just remove the jewelry.

  • These piercings scar and the piercing will appear open long after it is abandoned. Over time the scarring may fade.

  • The holes may produce a cream cheese-like discharge, this is sebum.
