Two lip or Labret Piercing is done on each side of the lower mouth. Usually in line with the edge of the nose. Can be done with rings that are more outside of the mouth or Labret Studs that are done into the mouth.

Difference between lips and Labrets.
History:

Lip Piercing was a common practice in the indigenous people of North America, South America, and Africa. Each with its own style of jewelry, place, signification, and meaning.

Modern piercing was developed in the 1970s and 1980s. However, the use of Bites to describe groupings didn’t come about until the late 90s/ early 2000s and evolved largely to the expansion of the internet.

Things to look for:

Piercer is experienced in this piercing, professional, informative and make you feel comfortable and offer a consultation that involves aftercare, risks, etc… The piercer should evaluate your anatomy.

More acceptable to STDs during oral sex even after the piercing is healed.

The risk of damaging teeth, gums, and bones
-
Can affect eating, drinking, kissing, and oral sex

Should discuss diet changes

Does the piercer provide aftercare products and written and verbal aftercare instructions?

Have a good meal beforehand
The Piercing Experience:

Consultation & Jewelry Selection

Waiver, Set Up, and Disinfection

Marking should be done to match the anatomy but still appear to match. Usually, the piercings are in line with the corners of the nose.

When marking make sure that your piercer understands what style of jewelry you want to wear in the piercing.

Best done with forceps but can be done freehand

Pierced from the outside inward

Jewelry Insertion

Labret Stud / Curved Barbells

the needle is replaced with a guide pin.

The jewelry is attached to the guide pin

The jewelry is inserted from the inside of the mouth and closed

Rings

The rings are pressed against the backside of the needle

The ring is inserted and closed.

There may be some slight to moderate bleeding.
-
Usually, you will have throbbing, aching, and warmth in the area for a few minutes afterward
-
Piercing is sensitive to the touch.
-
It will feel strange to have it in your mouth
-
The Labret jewelry will belong.
Healing:
-
The average healing time is 8-12 weeks or longer
-
Rinse twice daily with a non-alcohol based antiseptic mouthwash & warm saltwater
-
Must practice cross-contamination prevention and isolate and avoid any contact with the piercing.

Clean hands

no oral contact

do not share food items
-
Make sure utensils are clean
-
No Swimming
-
Keep Pets Away
-

Avoid playing with the piercing or excessive movement
-
Swelling can continue for two weeks or longer
-
Swelling will often happen the next morning after the piercing.

Cold items are your friend.
-
Change diet and reduce talking and movement
-
Reduce swelling including sleeping with your head elevated.
-

First 3-5 days you can experience slight bleeding off and on, redness/discolor, heat, and tenderness to the touch.
-
An oral piercing white ring of tissue, discharge, and nesting

Downsize ASAP and it might be done in stages

Nesting
Jewelry:
-
should leave jewelry in at all times
-
Labret jewelry should be downsized ASAP and may be done in stages.

check the tightness of the end.
-
Plastic Jewelry will cause damage.

If done with a labret ring can be worn but..
Living with the piercing:
-
The jewelry should be left in at all times.
-
Monitor teeth, gums, and bones in the piercing area. If there is a soreness, pain, or damage, remove the jewelry and abandon the piercing.

check the tightness of the ball regularly
-
Plaque can collect the jewelry, rinsing with anti-plaque mouthwash, or brushing will reduce this.
Abandoning the piercing:
-
If the piercing is still healing and there is signs of infection, see your piercer or doctor before removing the jewelry
-
If the piercing is healthy and still healing, treat it like any other wound or cut.
-
Will close but may appear open for a long period of time.
-
Often there are large indention scars, these may not go away completely but should fade over time.
-
The holes may produce a cream cheese-like discharge, this is sebum.
