Pierced Horizontally through the lobe of the ear.
History:

Dates back to over 5000 years. The mummy Otzi the Iceman from the 4th millennium had ear piercings
-
Has been a rite of passage piercing for most of history and is represented in just about every culture.

Sailors beginning around the 16th century began piercing ears to signify where they had traveled and to pay for their funeral.

In the 18th century clip-on earrings began to grow and popularity with women and those with pierced ears were considered of the lower class
-
In the 1950s and 1960s, it began to become more acceptable for women to have pierced ears. Usually at home, a doctor’s office or by a Nurse at a department store

Though there were a number of patents for ear piercing devices dating back to the 19th century, there wasn’t widespread use of Ear Piercing Devices until the 1970s. By the 1980s they were a commonly offered service at a number of retail shops in Malls. Increasingly it became common for toddler girls to get their ears pierced and for men to get their left ear pierced.

The development of modern piercing techniques was developed as a more safe and improved method in the late 1970s

Risks of Ear Piercing Devices:

There is no way to sterilize or reduce the risk of contamination of the device itself

Jewelry is semi-sharp and can create more trauma

Jewelry is usually not made of a biocompatible material or is plated.

Can only be used on the lobe

Can not be adapted to the thickness of the lobe.

Things to look for:
-
Piercer be experienced
-
The piercer should be professional, informative and make you feel comfortable
-
The piercer should offer a consultation that involves aftercare, risks, etc…
-
The piercer should evaluate your anatomy
-
Should use single uses a sterile piercing needle, not an ear-piercing device
-
Should suggest barbell or stud for piercing
-
If they pierce with a ring, the jewelry must be oversized
-
Do they provide aftercare products and written and verbal aftercare instruction?
The Piercing Experience:
-
Usually done freehand but forceps can be used
-
You should discuss future planned piercing when the piercer is choosing a placement.
-
No two lobes are shaped the same, look at the markings up close and then at arm's length. They should appear to match.
-
Piercing is very quick and usually not too painful.
-
The jewelry may require a little time to insert and close
-
There may be some slight to moderate bleeding
-
Usually, you will have throbbing or aching for a few minutes after the piercing is done.
-
Piercing is sensitive to the touch.
Healing:
-
The average healing time is 6-12 months
-
Saline twice daily
-
Must practice cross-contamination prevention and isolate and avoid any contact with the piercing.

Clean hands
-
no oral contact

Keep your bedding, clothing, towels, etc… clean
-
No Swimming
-
Keep Pets Away
-

Avoid contact or trauma to the area.

First 3-5 days you can experience slight bleeding off and on, redness/discolor, heat, and tenderness to the touch.

Do not sleep on the piercing no matter if it hurts or not
Jewelry Options:
-
Can change after the piercing is healed
-
Jewelry should always be wide enough to allow for the thickness of the lobe
Living with the piercing:
-
The jewelry should be left in at all times.
-
Avoid pressure or trauma to the piercing
-
Avoid wearing heavy jewelry that is of a thinner gauge
-
Adjust or change loose jewelry
-
Thicker jewelry may develop an odor or a cream cheese-like substance. This is Sebum and washing regularly will reduce it.
Abandoning the piercing:
-
Will close but may appear open for a long period of time.
-
There will be a small indented circular scar on each side. This may fade in time.
-
The holes may produce a cream cheese-like discharge, this is sebum.
