2020 Female Nipple Piercings Pros & Cons by a Piercing - S02 EP04

In Season 2 Episode 04, DaVo, a Professional Piercer since 1994, covers the Pros and Cons of Female Nipple Piercings.

I aka DaVo have been a professional body piercer and the owner of the Axiom Body Piercing Studio in Des Moines, Iowa since 1994. My focus on education and helping clients make safe and informed decisions on getting pierced has always been a large part of my business practices and services. With my website and increasingly on youtube, I hope to expand and inform others outside of my small part of the world. I always encourage questions and comments, so if you have one, please comment.

History

A great deal of lore surrounds Female Nipple Piercing but most of it is more fantasy than factual. The fact is that if victorian women and women of the 14th century did pierce their nipples, there isn't really any documentation. That said it is safe to say that since nipples lend themselves to piercing, that someone pierced them before modern time, there just isn't any documentation. This really isn't surprising when you consider that sexuality was not widely discussed in Western Culture.

There is documentation that the Native Americans that were located in what is now the gulf coast of Texas did pierce their nipples. For the most part though only those on the outer fringes of society were pierced. There are a few isolated cases throughout the 19th and early 20th century but widespread adoption is a modern invention.

Pros:

  1. Increases sensitivity

  2. Enhances the area

  3. Can make the nipple appear to be more developed(mention Inverted 4 out 5)

  4. Easy to hide

  5. Long History of healing

Cons

  1. Can’t Breastfeed with the jewelry in

  2. Long healing period

  3. Can migrate or reject

  4. Can be grumpy(during cycles)

  5. can be greatly affected by jewelry

Things to look for:

  • The piercer should have experience with the piercing

  • The piercer should be professional, informative and make you feel comfortable

  • Do they pierce with forceps or freehand

  • The piercer should offer a consultation that involves aftercare, risks, etc…

  • The piercer should evaluate your anatomy

  • Should suggest barbell for piercing

  • If they pierce with a ring, the jewelry must be oversized

  • Do they provide aftercare products and written and verbal aftercare instruction?

The Piercing Experience:

  • Can be done freehand but I suggest forceps

  • Forceps can be uncomfortable going on and coming off

  • Piercing is very quick but can be painful usually a slight sting or electrical feeling.

  • Usually, you will have throbbing or aching for a few minutes after the piercing is done.

  • Piercing is extremely sensitive to the touch.

Healing:

  • The average healing time is 6-12 months

  • Saline twice daily

  • Must practice cross-contamination prevention and isolate and avoid any contact with the piercing.

    • Clean hands

    • no oral contact

    • Keep your bedding, clothing, towels, etc… clean

    • No Swimming

    • Keep Pets Away

  • Avoid contact or trauma to the area.

  • First 3-5 days you can experience slight bleeding off and on, redness/discolor, heat, and tenderness to the touch.

  • Do not sleep on the piercing no matter if it hurts or not

Jewelry Options:

  • Can change after the piercing is healed

  • Rings should be oversized

  • Barbells are the best option

Living with the piercing:

  • The jewelry should be left in at all times.

  • Avoid pressure or trauma to the piercing

  • Adjust or change loose jewelry

  • If you breastfeed, consider abandoning the piercings or coming up with a plan on removing them and replacing them.

  • May develop an odor or a cream cheese-like substance. This is Sebum and washing regularly will reduce it.

Abandoning the piercing:

  • Well begin to close quickly but may look open for some time.

  • The nipple growth may not go away

  • There will be a small indented circular scar on each side. This may fade in time.

  • The holes may produce a cream cheese-like discharge, this is sebum.
