Can A Piercing Cure You? - Body Piercing Basics EP127

In the 127th episode of DaVo's Youtube series Body Piercing Basics, the topic is can piercings heal or reduce the symptoms of pre-existing medical conditions?

Show Notes:

How it started

The claim is that piercing these areas, it will permanently stimulate the Vagus Nerve.

Vagus nerve stimulation is a medical device that is used to treat depression, and epilepsy, and is thought could be used in the future to treat MS, Alzheimer's Disease, and Cluster headaches. Unlike a piercing, it uses electrical impulses to stimulate the nerve.

The Vagus Nerve is responsible for a large part of the autonomic nervous system functions like digestion, heart rate, breathing, cardiovascular activity, and reflex actions like Coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting. It is also the longest cranial nerve running from the brain stem to part of the colon.

Acupuncture/acupressure and pressure points in the ear:

  1. Shen men(center of the upper ear) - Reduces Stress. Piercing Claims to reduce anxiety and/or migraines

  2. Point Zero(The base of the Daith) - Calming and Grounding

  3. Tranquilizer(bottom of the Tragus) - causes relaxation

  4. Anti-tragus or daith area - weight loss and quitting smoking

Will piercings have the same effect as acupuncture or acupressure?

  • The majority of piercers are not trained in either and are going to place piercings where they will heal and look best, not where the pressure point is.

  • The effect of both is temporary and a piercing is not going to add endless stimulation to the area.

  • Acupressure includes the use of light electrical stimulation through the needle, which isn’t going to happen with a piercing.

  • Part of the reason that it is said to work is the stimulation of the body caused by causing slight to mild pain. Which causes the body to release chemicals that help with pain control and stimulate other functions. The piercing will do this at the time of the piercing but will not over time.

  • The placebo effect - The more a person wants it to work, the more the effect. Even though there is no physical proof of it working.

In conclusion:

  • There is no scientific proof that piercings will help with health conditions

  • Avoid piercers that make claims to cure health conditions

  • Piercings can increase the sensitivity of areas and enhance the beauty

  • If you believe it will work. it may

  • If it doesn’t work, you are going to end up with a great new piercing.
