How to Avoid Lightheadedness When Getting Pierced - Body Piercing Basics EP91

In the 91st episode in our Youtube series Body Piercing Basics, DaVo covers how to avoid and deal with getting lightheaded or passing out when getting a piercing

Causes:

Lightheadedness and fainting are caused when there is a drop in the blood pressure supply to the brain. This can be caused simply by getting up too quickly.

  1. Fight or flight

  2. Low Blood sugar

  3. anxiety

  4. stress

  5. dehydration

  6. prolonged exposure to hot weather

  7. low blood sugar

  8. alcohol, tobacco, or drug use

  9. certain medications

 

Symptoms:

  1. Faintness

  2. Dizziness

  3. Nausea

  4. Fainting

  5. Ears Ringing

  6. Impaired Vision

 

How to avoid:

  1. Get plenty of rest the night before

  2. Do not drink or use controlled/uncontrolled substances for 24 hours before getting pierced

  3. If you are on proscribed medication that has these side effects talk to your doctor about reducing the dose before the piercing.

  4. Eat a meal with simple carbohydrates a few hours before getting pierced

  5. Drink Juices that are high in sugar like apple juice

  6. Do not eat salty foods.

  7. Stay hydrated especially if it is hot outside, Do not drink sports drinks because they are high in sodium. Also, avoid caffeine

  8. Do your research on the piercing and your piercer

  9. Bring calming moral support with you.

  10. Make your piercer aware that you are prone to being lightheaded and passing out

  11. Do a consultation beforehand and have your piercer walk you through what is going to happen.

  12. Visit and get comfortable with your piercer.

  13. Do not try to be Billy Bad Ass

 

What to do:

  1. Make your piercer aware of how you are feeling

  2. If you are standing, sit down in an easily controlled area free of anything that may cause harm

  3. Lay back

  4. drink water or juice

  5. suck on hard candy or drink juice that is high in sugar

  6. relax and let it happen to know that you are in a safe place and taken care of.

  7. If you feel nausea, make your piercer aware.
