Davo's Personal Blogs

I started writing these Reports long before they called them blogs. They date back to 1998 and there are some big empty spaces in there. They are partly rants, partly histroy but they are all me. Often the subject manner is something that either got my goat or interests me at the time. They range in subjects from the joys and fustrations of daily life to music to gadgets to vacations. Living Front Side

I wrote a rather long blog a few days ago and was finishing up with the menu placement, book settings and all the behind the scenes stuff. Most of it is done through drop down menus which works really well but since the site tends to have rather large menus, it can be really big lists. At any rate, I was clicking on the menu settings and some how when I clicked, the cursor had wondered off of the drop list and found itself hovering over the Google Chrome Bookmark Bar. So instead to selecting the menu link, I ended up clicking on the Gmail bookmark.

Life with the Samsung Chromebook

I know it is another tech blog. Don't worry I'll try to make the next one a "What I'm up to" or maybe an endless rant about something but I got a new toy. It's a new toy that I have advise a few people against but after logging a lot of time on my desktop and aging Sony Vaio Notebook building the new site. The Sony is about 3 years old and though it is showing it's age is still a pretty responsive Windows 7 machine. I have a few upgrades in mind in the near future to give it a slight longer life but I was increasingly finding myself dreading pulling the thing out.

Part 9 Installing Drupal Themes and Configuring Blocks

In this finial installment of my blog series on creating a website, I will be covering installing Drupal themes and configuring blocks. My goal is to jsut give you a very basic understand of how the two work and how to use them. There is a great number of things that you can do with the combination to create a website that works for you but here's the basics.

Themes - Themes in Drupal control the display of the content and the layout of each page. It does this by breaking the layout into regions that you can then add blocks or content to.

Part 8 - Installing Additional Modules and Scripts

In the eighth installment on my blog series on how to create a website, I will be covering installing additional modules and scripts that will be needed to add function to your website. In the last installment I focused on just the basic core modules that came with the Drupal installation and how to enable and where to go to configure the modules. Now that you have all that the basic installation has to give it's time to go out and find some additional functions to add to your site.

Part 7 - Installing Drupal; Core Modules

In this the seventh installment of my blog series on I will be covering installing additional Drupal modules to add function and features to your website.

Part 6- Installing Drupal CMS

In part six of my blog series on creating a website, I will be covering installing Drupal CMS.

Part 5 CMS or Content Management System

In the fifth Installment of my blog series on building a web site, I will be cover CMS or Content Management Systems.

Part 4 - Knowing Your Code

In this installment of my blog on building a web site, knowing your code, I give basic description of some of the code and programing languages used in building a web site. I hope to also give a very basic understanding of what the code does. There is a lot of documentation on the web if you would like to learn more.

Part 3 - Hosting and Domain

In the third installment of this series on Web Site Building. I will be covering Hosting and Domain

When starting out there are a lot of confusing terms and one of them that seems to confuse people is hosting and domain. The easiest way to explain the domain is the address and the hosting service is the physical location of your website. You will need both.

Part 2 - Do It Yourself or Hire Someone to Build Your Site

In this second installment of the web site building blog series I will cover what going into planning out a website and deciding whether to do it yourself or hire someone to build your site.

Why do I need a Website?

After a huge rebuild of the site, I thought for my first blog on the new site I would write a little about one of my passions that I write the least about, website building and design. To keep it from being a little too much inside baseball, I figured I write out something that anyone could understand. At first I was going to just post one blog but it got a little long winded(surprise, surprise). So I decided to do a series of blogs coving the why and how to. In this installment I will be covering the reasons why you need a website.

To have or to have The Have Nots

Since my last blog was one of my many long babbling essays on the state of man, I decided to do another that the main focus is more about what I've been up to. Which for the most part really isn't a lot but then again seems to take all the time between when I give in to the idea of being out of bed and then point where I give into sleep. Which on average is around 16 or 17 hours a day. So you'd think something of interest would happen.

Many Will Have to Die

This weekend I was at my sister's and we were tearing down her old laptop to do a minor repair to the power module. Basically the thing got shoved in and a piece of plastic that held it in place broke off. The hardest part was tearing the thing down but once we got to a stopping point, she asked me to step up the printer for my nephew's new laptop. I was busy with something else and told my 14 year old son to walk him through it.
